ABOUT CORTISOL TESTS

The cortisol (saliva) test evaluates levels of cortisol—a hormone produced by the adrenal glands that plays a key role in the body’s stress response. Unlike blood cortisol tests, the saliva test reflects the active, free cortisol available in the body. It is often used to assess adrenal fatigue, sleep disorders, chronic stress, and Cushing’s or Addison’s disease. Testing may be done at multiple times throughout the day to detect abnormal daily cortisol patterns.

If you experience fatigue, poor sleep, anxiety, weight changes, or symptoms of adrenal imbalance, this test may help identify whether abnormal cortisol levels are contributing.

The test measures free cortisol levels in your saliva, which can vary throughout the day and reflect your body’s natural stress rhythm.

It reveals cortisol production patterns, which may indicate conditions like adrenal fatigue, chronic stress, or hormonal imbalance. It also helps guide treatment for cortisol-related disorders.

Avoid eating, drinking, brushing teeth, or using mouthwash 30 minutes before sample collection. Specific collection times may be required based on your provider’s guidance.
