ABOUT LIPOPROTEIN (A) TESTS
Lipoprotein (A), or Lp(A), is a type of lipoprotein similar to LDL cholesterol but with an added protein called apolipoprotein (A). Elevated Lp (A) levels are considered a significant genetic risk factor for cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack and stroke, independent of other cholesterol levels. Testing Lp (A) can help provide a clearer picture of your heart health risk, especially if you have a family history of early heart disease or high cholesterol.
This test is especially useful if you have a personal or family history of early cardiovascular disease, high cholesterol that’s difficult to manage, or if your standard lipid panel doesn’t fully explain your heart disease risk. Elevated Lp(a) can exist even when other cholesterol levels are normal.
The test measures the concentration of Lipoprotein (a) particles in your blood, which differ from regular LDL cholesterol and have unique implications for heart disease risk.
Understanding your Lp(a) levels helps your healthcare provider better assess your overall cardiovascular risk and may influence treatment decisions, such as more aggressive cholesterol management or lifestyle changes.
No special preparation or fasting is required. A simple blood draw is performed to obtain the sample.
