ABOUT HOMOCYSTEINE TESTS

Homocysteine is an amino acid in the blood that’s influenced by your diet and metabolism. Elevated levels of homocysteine are associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and blood clots. This test also helps identify potential vitamin B6, B12, or folate deficiencies, as these vitamins are essential for breaking down homocysteine. Regular monitoring can be important for individuals with heart disease, family history of vascular issues, or those at risk for vitamin-related disorders.

You may benefit from this test if you have a personal or family history of heart disease, blood clots, or stroke, or if your healthcare provider suspects a vitamin B deficiency. It’s also useful if you’re managing conditions like high cholesterol or high blood pressure.

This test measures the level of homocysteine in your blood. Elevated levels can indicate increased cardiovascular risk or a deficiency in B vitamins.

The results can help identify hidden risk factors for heart and vascular disease and reveal potential vitamin deficiencies that may be affecting your health. Your provider can use this information to tailor treatment, such as supplementing with B vitamins or adjusting your diet.

Fasting for 8–12 hours may be recommended for the most accurate results. A blood sample will be drawn during your appointment.
