ABOUT ESR TESTS
The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) test measures how quickly red blood cells settle at the bottom of a test tube over a specified period. A faster-than-normal rate can indicate inflammation in the body. While not specific to a particular condition, the ESR is often used in conjunction with other tests to detect or monitor inflammatory disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, or infections.
This test is useful if you’re experiencing unexplained symptoms like joint pain, fatigue, fever, or weight loss, or if your healthcare provider is monitoring an ongoing inflammatory condition.
The test measures the rate at which red blood cells settle in a tube over one hour—a higher rate suggests inflammation.
The ESR result indicates the presence and severity of inflammation in your body. It doesn’t diagnose a specific illness but helps narrow down possible causes of symptoms.
