ABOUT CARCINOEMBRYONIC ANTIGEN TESTS
The carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) test measures the level of CEA—a protein that may be elevated in certain cancers, especially colorectal, lung, breast, pancreatic, and ovarian cancer. While not used as a primary screening tool, it is valuable in tracking the effectiveness of treatment or checking for cancer recurrence after surgery or therapy. CEA levels can also be affected by non-cancerous conditions such as inflammation, liver disease, or smoking.
This test is generally recommended if you have been diagnosed with certain types of cancer and your doctor wants to monitor treatment progress or check for recurrence. It may also be used in follow-up if you have a history of high CEA levels.
The test measures the concentration of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) in your blood—a protein that can be produced in higher amounts by certain cancerous tumors.
It can show how well your cancer treatment is working or whether the cancer has come back. While not diagnostic on its own, trends in your CEA levels provide valuable information over time.
No special preparation is required. However, let your provider know about any medications or if you smoke, as these can affect results. A standard blood draw will be taken.
