ABOUT THYROID PEROXIDASE ANTIBODIES (TPO) TESTS
The Thyroid Peroxidase Antibodies (TPO) test measures the presence of antibodies that attack thyroid peroxidase—an enzyme essential for thyroid hormone production. High levels of TPO antibodies can indicate autoimmune thyroid conditions like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis or Graves’ disease, even before symptoms appear or thyroid hormone levels become abnormal. This test is commonly used to support early diagnosis and monitoring of thyroid-related autoimmune diseases.
This test is recommended if you have symptoms such as fatigue, weight changes, sensitivity to cold or heat, or mood changes. It’s also helpful if you have a personal or family history of thyroid disorders or autoimmune diseases.
The test measures the level of thyroid peroxidase antibodies (TPOAb) in your blood. These antibodies are markers of autoimmune activity against the thyroid gland.
It helps identify autoimmune thyroid diseases like Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and Graves’ disease, even in early stages. Detecting elevated TPO antibodies early can guide timely treatment and monitoring to help prevent thyroid dysfunction.
